Description[Texas Rangers]. John S. "Rip" Ford Cabinet Card, circa 1885, 4.25" x 6.5". The aged Texas Ranger, a veteran of the Mexican War and the Civil War, poses with a full white beard. Hinged to the top of the verso is a sheet of notes that folds over the photograph. The notes are in the hand of James DeShields, an early Texas historian who knew many of the early Texas Rangers. According to this attached note, this photograph was taken for a writing project that DeShields was working on at the time ("Photo from life--expressly for this work"). Bumping along the corners and some chipping to the photograph. Contemporary identification on the verso, along with the photographer's stamp (S. B. Hill of Austin).
