Description

[Texas Rangers]. Company "B" Battalion Photograph, circa 1870s. 8" x 4", sepia-toned albumen. This photograph features Texas Ranger Company "B" Frontier Battalion mounted and prepared to go on a scouting trip near Fort Concho, Texas. On the left side of the photograph, supply donkeys are being loaded with standard Ranger camp rations. The second mounted man from the left is Captain Ira Long who served as a Texas Ranger from 1872-1880 and was elevated to the rank of captain in 1875. Fort Concho, located near San Angelo, Texas, was built in 1867 to aid in the protection of new frontier colonies in the area against lingering hostile forces, and served as a base for scouting and mapping the vast and widely unexplored region of West Texas. Back stamp reads, "Sanders & Lester, Photographers." Moderate wear to edges of photograph with mounting remnants on verso. A previous collector has written his name on the verso in modern ink.
