Description[Texas Rangers]. Alfred Evans Cabinet Card, circa 1870s. 4.25" x 6.5". Alfred Evans (1810-1896) served the state of Texas in various capacities: as a local politician, state representative, and company commander of the state militia during the Civil War. During the Mexican War, he served in Captain Claiborne Herbert's company under Jack Hays. Backstamped by photographer H. R. Rustin of Belton, Texas. Ink notations on front and back. Hinged to the top of the verso is a note in the hand of James DeShields, an early Texas historian who knew many of the early Texas Rangers. The note originally folded over the photograph of Evans but has since detached along the hinge. Provenance: James T. DeShields.
