Description

[Texas Ranger Ben F. Sachever]. Artesian Well at Cotulla, Texas, Cabinet Card, circa 1887. 6.5" x 4.25". A sepia toned albumen of three men at a well. They are identified on the verso as: "Man on left (behind well) is Ranger Ben F. Sacherer of Schmitt's Co. C. Other 2 men are water haulers who sold water." Captain George H. Schmitt served as captain of Company "C" from 1883-1887. Ownership stamped "J.W. Durbin" and identified in period ink on verso: "Arteasenan Well at Cotulla Jan 1887." J.W. Durbin is likely Joseph Walter Durbin, also a Texas Ranger. Traces of foxing on image and some staining on verso. A previous collector has also written his name on the verso in modern ink. Provenance: Durbin Family, George Jackson Collection.
