Description[Mier Expedition]. Cabinet Card Featuring the Common Tomb Containing the Remains of Those Killed in the Dawson Massacre and the Black Bean Episode, circa 1870s. 4.25" x 6.5", La Grange, Texas. The white tomb is centered in the photograph, while a gentleman stands to the right. In the lower margin is the photographer's stamp ("Peterson, La Grange, Texas"). Penciled notations on the verso refer to the tomb as the "Old Vault." The remains of the Dawson Massacre Texans were brought to the tomb in 1848; those of the Mier Expedition's Black Bean Episode-killed by firing squad at Salado, Mexico, in 1842-came later. Lightly age toned. Lower left corner has been chipped.
