    Description

Buffalo Bill's Wild West, 1887: A Monumental Cast Photograph. 14" x 11" on a 15" x 12.5" board, it has a taped break in the center sky, is lightly soiled throughout with some staining, has a bumped and chipped board with breaks at the upper left and lower right corners. But the blemishes are irrelevant. This is a fabulous image, virtually unknown in this size. The details are wonderful. Annie Oakley stands right front center. Buffalo Bill is seated cross-legged in the center with Nate Salsbury to his right. Behind them, along with cowboy Tom Webb is little Benny Irving, half Lakota and "the smallest cowboy in the world," and the camp matron, Ma Whitaker. Look up to the left to see the giant cowboy Dick Johnson with a big stogie in his mouth. Buffalo Bill's daughter Arta is seated at the left. About the same distance to the right is Sioux chief Red Shirt. And at the top of the pyramid, standing above Johnny Baker, is Sgt. Bates with his Stars and Stripes. Every face in this remarkably posed and focused shot is recognizable. At the bottom, Annie Oakley has written "Taken in London in 1887 in the back [grounds]." But it gets better, if possible. On the back of the card she has written "Property of Annie Oakley" giving us the boldest Annie autograph we've ever seen. The signature stretches across 4.125". The "A" in Annie stands a full inch tall. Additionally, she has rubber stamped it with her familiar "Annie Oakley" in gothic lettering. Truly a one-of-a-kind piece. This lot is from the collection of Bess Edwards, grand-niece of Annie Oakley, and will be accompanied by a signed letter from her authenticating this item as described.
