Black Soldier Luther Hubbard Carte de Visite with Additional Tintypes of White Family with Same Surname. A group of six images relating to the Hubbard family, all measuring approximately 2.5" x 4". The carte de visite of Luther Hubbard has a Sam A. Cooley Photographer, Hilton Head imprint on verso. A standing portrait of Hubbard, dressed in his first sergeant uniform. He enlisted on February 27, 1864 and served in Company C of the 26th Regiment U. S. Colored Infantry. It is believed that he survived the war and was mustered out circa August of 1865.

The 26th Regiment U.S. Colored Infantry, also known as the 26th New York Infantry (Colored), was one of three colored units from New York. The regiment was commanded by Col. William Silliman and saw action at Johns Island, Honey Hill, and Tulifinny, South Carolina. In the last year of the war, the unit was stationed at Beaufort, South Carolina and remained there until they were mustered out in August 1865.

The additional images are cropped tintypes, framed in small cardstock cards. The members of a Caucasian family are identified as great grandfather Reynolds, Emma J. Reynolds Hubbard, Mrs. Ben Hubbard, Dora Hubbard, and Grandpa Reynolds. It is unknown if this family are of any relation to Luther Hubbard. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: The carte de visite is toned throughout, with foxing at the edges and on verso. There is soiling at the top center edge of the image and on the bottom corners. There are varying degrees of toning and foxing on the additional images. Some of the images have minor imperfections or scratches. Overall good.
