Beautiful Oversize Full Plate Portrait of Four Women by Iconic American Daguerreotypists Albert Southworth and Josiah Hawes. This is the exact image illustrated on P. 486 Plate 1768 in the authoritative book "Young America The Daguerreotypes of Southworth And Hawes". The plate measures 7.25" X 9.25" and is housed in a fitted black leather push button case. Generally accepted, then and now, as the most aesthetically skilled of all American daguerreotypists, this image exhibits all of the characteristics generally evidenced in their images, all qualities that clearly separated them from other practicing artists of the period. The combination of the very creative, almost allegorical pose, with the skilled use of light and shadow, combined with an appealing soft focus, clearly identifies the image as the work of Southworth & Hawes. The image exhibits magnificent quality and pristine condition and is untouched/uncleaned. An absolutely gorgeous image, representing a rare opportunity to obtain an exceptional example, with firm attribution, from the most skilled and desirable of all American daguerreotypists.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
