    Anvil Mine No. 9, Nome, Alaska: A Photo by Beverly Bennett Dobbs, Circa 1900. An early Alaska mining image with long sluice box, working miners, and stacked bags of ore. Some buildings still in tent stage.

    Dobbs was a notable photographer of the day, arriving in Nome in 1900 and opening his studio in 1903. He photographed many sites in the Nome area as well as the native Inuit people (Eskimos). For his Inuit images he received a gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Around 1909 he started the Dobbs Alaska Moving Picture Co., making him the first to use motion picture film north of the Arctic Circle. This strong, clear photo is signed "Dobbs" and measures 9.5" x 7.5".
