    Description

Annie Oakley: Two Photographs, 1919. While wintering at the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Annie and Frank dressed up for a Valentine's Day costume ball. Annie made this whimsical "Indian" outfit adorned with pheasant feathers (she had, of course, bagged the pheasants herself). Note that she also wore the contents of her jewelry box - rings, charm bracelet (available in this auction), and layers of beads. At least some of the beaded necklaces went to her niece Fern Campbell and are now in the Annie Oakley Center at the Garst Museum. These photographs (one shows her standing, the other seated) were intended for family and friends. The condition of both, aside from minor oxidation and some water spotting, is excellent. This lot is from the collection of Bess Edwards, grand-niece of Annie Oakley, and will be accompanied by a signed letter from her authenticating this item as described. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
