    Description

Very Rare John C. Frémont Ambrotype, Possibly an 1856 Campaign Item. The image is actually a photographic image of an engraved portrait, perhaps the most familiar pose of Frémont at the time of the 1856 election. Indeed, this image is found on 16 of the 20 1856 Frémont portrait ribbons pictured by Fischer. Frémont was the first candidate of the fledgling Republican Party, but lost to Buchanan as Millard Fillmore's third candidacy siphoned off Whig votes; together they commanded 55% of the popular vote, to "Old Buck's" 45%.

The elaborate ornamental border, part of the ambrotype itself, was clearly added during the production process of this particular item, as it slightly overlaps the facsimile "Fremont" signature below his bust, and this suggests a commercial application. There is evidence of a suspension loop at the top of the foil frame, further supporting the theory that this may have been a campaign display item. In any case, it is simply gorgeous, and the ambrotype itself is pristine. 2.75" x 3.25".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
