Quarter Plate Ambrotype of Family (Krainik 18/52), ca. 1860, perfect equilibrium between the sexes is achieved in this portrait showing a small boy, his sister and their parents. Everyone is cooperating for the photographer except for the little girl who, sadly, appears to suffer from Downs Syndrome. The lid of the image's thermoplastic case is embossed with "The Capture of Major Andre", Krainik 18 while the back panel is a geometric and floral affair, Krainik 52. The manufacturers of this case, Peck and Halvorson, based their work upon an original painting by Asher B. Durand. John Andre's capture during the Revolution and his subsequent execution was a highly publicized and bittersweet tale that symbolized the fraternal nature of war between Britain and America. Both image and case are in excellent condition.
