George Washington: Rare Ambrotype, Equestrian Statue Photographic Case and More. The faculty of Ingham University along with the main building appear in a composite ambrotype in this half-plate thermoplastic case (Krainik #4) depicting the Washington Monument in Richmond, Virginia. The facing insert card is signed by the President of the University, Samuel Hanson Cox. It appears the card and souvenir photo were presented to Emma Lydia Murray of the class of 1858. It is numbered 114. Ingham University was the first women's university in the United States and was located in Leroy, New York. This composite photo is possibly an example of the "medallion" portraits introduced by Southworth & Hawes. "Using the sliding plate holder Southworth had patented in 1855, Southworth & Hawes further exploited this medallion style by continuing the process for eight sequential exposures of different rotating poses" (viz., "The Spirit of Fact: The Daguerreotypes of Southworth & Hawes 1843-1862"). It is accompanied by a 5" x 6" silvered brass plaque depicting the same design which we feel may have been used as a mold in the manufacturing process of the cases. Finally, to complete the ensemble, we include a gutta percha collar box (4.5" x 4.5" x 3") with the same design on the lid.
