    Alpheus Starkey Williams (1810-1878) was a Yale-educated lawyer and newspaper publisher in Detroit before he joined the Union army and was made a brevet major general of volunteers in the Union Army. He was known as "Old Pap" because of his full beard and fought at Cedar Mountain, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Atlanta Campaign. He later served as minister resident of El Salvador (1866-69) and was then elected as a Democrat to two terms of Congress, from 1875 until his death.

    Condition: Light toning and uneven spotting. Bumped lower corners.
