Alexander Stephens Carte de Visite Signed "Alexander H Stephens." 2.5" x 4", with an M.B. Brady & Co., Washington, D.C. and New York imprint on verso. A three quarter portrait of the frail Vice President of the Confederacy. Stephens suffered from illness throughout his life and was plagued by rheumatoid arthritis and back pain. As an adult, he often weighed no more than 100 pounds, despite being 5' 7". The card is captioned: "Entered according to Act of Congress by M.B. Brady & Co. in the year 1865 in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia."

Alexander Stephens (1812-1883) studied law before being elected to the Georgia Senate. When the Civil War broke out he was chosen by the Confederate Congress to be President Jefferson Davis' vice president. He is most well known for his Cornerstone Speech, given on March 21, 1861, in which he argued that slavery was the natural condition of African Americans and the foundation upon which the Confederacy rested. When the war ended, he was arrested for treason and imprisoned at Fort Warren for five months. However, he would go on to continue his political career and was elected a U.S. Representative, serving from 1873 to 1882. Upon his resignation from Congress, he became Governor of Georgia, but died four months after taking office. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Near fine condition, with only light toning throughout and minor soiling on verso.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
