    Alexander S. Webb Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a chest-up portrait in uniform, with an O.H. Willard's Galleries, Philadelphia backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "Alex. S. Webb U.S.A." On verso is a blue 2 cent George Washington stamp.

    Alexander Webb (1835-1911) had been a mathematics professor at West Point before the war began. He fought at Fort Pickens, First Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. There, the Pennsylvania troops under his command took a position near a stone wall in the center of the Union line, which became the focal point of Pickett's Charge. Webb lost 451 of his men in the attack and sustained a wound himself. He was later awarded the Medal of Honor and returned to action at Bristoe, Mine Run and Spotsylvania, where he was wounded again. After the war, Webb served as President of C.C.N.Y. for 33 years.
