    Alexander Gardner: "Major General E.V. Sumner and Staff." Warrenton, November 13, 1862. Published by M.B. Brady. Albumen measure 9" x 7" and is mounted on a 11.5" x 9.5" title card. This is the scarcer version of this pose showing ten officers, there is a similar view showing eight officers. Pictured are (from left to right): 1. Captain W.G. Jones; 2. Major Laurence Kip, A.D.C.; 3. Lt. Colonel Joseph H. Taylor, A.A.C.; 4. Lt. Colonel Alonzo H. Cushing; 5. General E.V. Sumner; 6. Captain S.S. Sumner (the general's son); 7. Captain J.M. Garland, Chief of Ambulances; 8. Lt. Colonel W.W. Teall. The last two men are unidentified.

    Lt. Colonel Cushing enlisted in June 1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant, immediately after graduating from West Point. Commander of Battery A, 4th Artillery, he died on July 3, 1863 during Pickett's Charge at Cemetery Ridge next to the artillery guns he refused to leave. Cushing was just 22 years old.

    Dampstaining and soiling to the mount, as well as peeling to the surface and adhesive residue at top. The albumen has a small repaired tear at top, but is otherwise not affected and remains attractive with good detail. Pencil notations and foxing on the verso. A scarce and desirable image.
