Albumen Photograph of Oglala Sioux Chief Young-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses in Front of His Tepee, Pine Lodge Agency, South Dakota, 1891. Approximately 7.5" x 5", in a modern mat with an overall size of 11" x 8.5". Captioned in the negative. Young-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses (1836-1900) stands with his percussion rifle in front of his tepee at the Pine Lodge Agency on January 17, 1891, just three weeks after the Wounded Knee Massacre. The photograph is likely from the studio of the Northwestern Photographic Company of Chadron, Nebraska as their advertisement appears with two others on the reverse of the photograph. They advertise views of "Wounded Knee Battle, Indian Camps, War Camps, Indian Chiefs. Everything of interest in the late Pine Ridge War are held by us for sale." The photograph has scattered loss to the emulsion, a chip at the top center edge and two 2" surface cracks at the lower right corner. The reverse is slightly foxed and displays a few scattered small stains. The image is slightly soft though still sharp enough to make out the details of the tepees, wagons, and impedimenta of camp life. Good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
