    Description

Alaska Gold Rush: Important Images of Skookum Jim & George Carmack, the Two Discovers of Gold in the Klondikes in 1896. By E.A. Hegg, and each captioned "Nuggets from No. 5 Anvil Creek Alaska Largest 1½ lb." Offered here are two great images of the two men who started it all! The two, following the suggestion of another prospector named Robert Henderson, began exploring what was then known as Rabbit Creek (now Bonanza Creek) a tributary of the Klondike River. There they found gold in huge quantities on August 16, 1896, and quickly staked out their claims. By the end of the month, all of the land along the creek had been staked out, leading prospectors to explore a tributary later named Eldorado Creek, which yielded up even richer sources of gold. An estimated 100,000 people stampeded to the gold fields of Alaska, enduring tremendous hardships to seek their fortunes.

E.A. Hegg was among the most important of early Alaska photographers, and from 1897 through 1899 recorded some of the most famous images of the Gold Rush. These two 7.5" x 5.75" original photos of the first discoveries of gold must surely be among the most desirable. Each is a bit light and has minor imperfections as shown, but nonetheless great Gold Rush images.
