    Description

African-American Tintype Album. Twenty-one tintype images and two cartes-de-visite featuring prominent African-Americans from East Magnolia, New Jersey (later renamed Lawnside). The images are contained in a period leather album measuring 5.5" x 6.5"; the boards with foliate designs stamped in gilt, ornaments in each corner, and with brass clasps. The verso of the front endpaper bears the inscription in pencil "Property of / Hannah Hicks / Charleston Ave. / East Magnolia". Research indicates that Hannah Hicks was born about 1878 and was married to Newkirk Hicks. There are excellent tintype images of both Hannah and her husband in the album. The pages have been annotated in blue ink at a later time by Hannah's niece, name unknown. Each of the surviving images has been identified on an index page preceding the contents. Besides Hicks, surnames include Daisy, Jones, Johnson, Summers, Fawcet and Arthur. Research indicates that the Hicks and their relatives were members of the Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church in Magnolia which was established in 1828. Magnolia, New Jersey was the first self-governing black township north of the Mason-Dixon line and was founded as a community for freed and escaped slaves. It operated a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Condition: The album scuffed at the corners and edges and is lacking the spine causing the boards to be detached; the images in generally very good condition. The cartes de visite have heavy wear and are in fair condition.
