    Description

Absolutely Stunning, Circa 1856 Sixth Plate Daguerreotype Portrait of an Approximately Twenty-one Year Old Absalom K. Simonton II. In May of 1861, Simonton Enrolled as a Captain and Member of the "Iredell Blues" in the 4th North Carolina. Simonton served with the regiment through fierce fighting in 1861 and 1862 and was promoted to Major and transferred to Field & Staff on May 1, 1862. Simonton was killed in action at Seven Pines on May 31, 1862, the date his promotion went into effect. The image is truly exquisite. Simonton is seated wearing a high 1839 style forage cap with oil cloth cover. He holds a double barrel percussion shotgun with the hammers cocked. Rifle/game bag sling over one shoulder with the bag partially visible and a wide leather waist belt with suspender suspensory system. The top of a powder flask is visible at the lower right. We have not removed the mat and their are doubtless other details that would be exposed in doing so. Pristine uncleaned condition, professionally resealed. Accompanied by a circa 1930 ink script note that was tucked behind the image, "A. K. Simonton/ ready for the chase." Housed in the original pebbled leather push button case, hinge split otherwise mint. A great Civil War associated daguerreotype.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
