Abraham Lincoln: A Wonderful Signed Carte de Visite Photo, Thrice Authenticated!
Few Lincoln artifacts are more sought-after than signed photos, and this is a very special example indeed. This famous "inkwell pose" was taken by Brady shortly after Lincoln assumed the presidency, and the 2.375" x 3.75" CDV bears the back-mark of his N.Y. affiliate E. Anthony. The original owner has written "Dec. 1861" on verso.

The authentications begin with the most authoritative of all, a "certification" on the reverse by John Hay, Lincoln's personal secretary. It is also accompanied by a letter of authentication by legendary autograph expert Charles Hamilton, and most recently was authenticated and encapsulated by the widely-respected authentication and grading service PSA/DNA, who assigned the bold signature a "Mint 9" rating.

Condition of the CDV itself is very nice, with exceptionally deep, strong sepia image and only very light scattered indicators of age.
In the hierarchy of Lincoln signed photos, those bearing John Hay authentications are particularly prized because of their self-authenticating nature. Heritage has handled one other example, a different Brady pose which brought $175,000 in our first "Lincoln and His Times" auction on September 17, 2016. We have assigned this one a modest minimum opening bid which should generate great activity.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
