    Scurlock Studios (1904-1994)
    Gelatin silver print
    19.25" x 9.25" (48.90 x 23.50 cm)
    Mounted on cardstock, 19.25" x 10" (48.90 x 25.40 cm)
    Washington, D.C.; December 13, 1956

Signed at lower right corner in black ink. The photograph captures the all-black 91st Army Band, commanded by Arthur E. Smith. The 91st Army Band was formed in 1953 due to segregation constraints. It was not until 1959 that the band was desegregated and consolidated with the 257th Army Band. Addison Scurlock (1883-1964), the founder of Scurlock Studios, opened his photography studio in 1904 and photographed a wide variety of the black Washington population - from public figures to wedding couples, school groups, and military units. Famous subjects shot by Scurlock include Duke Ellington, George Washington Carver, and Booker T. Washington. Scurlock's sons Robert and George joined the business during the 1930s and opened their own branches. After their father's death, the sons took over Scurlock Studios until Robert's death in 1994.

Condition: Light wear and soiling to the cardstock and photograph edges, else very good.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
