4th Regiment Iowa Cavalry Collection of 45 Civil War CDVs. The Iowa 4th was one of the most distinguished cavalry regiments in the West. It was mustered in at Camp Harlan in November 1861, mustered out at Atlanta in August 1865, and discharged at Davenport, Iowa shortly thereafter. Fighting bravely at Jackson, Vicksburg, Meridian, Brice's Cross Roads, Tupelo, Little Blue, Mine Creek, and Selma, they lost 4 officers and 51 enlisted men in battle, and 5 officers and 194 enlisted men by disease.

This lot contains 45 separate cartes de visite, mostly of members of Company "M" of the Iowa 4th, the majority pictured in uniform. Most all have notations, front or back, of the name and often, the rank, of the soldier pictured. These were apparently the collection of a member of the company named Jacob S. Gantz (Gants) whose wound at Six Mile Creek in Alabama required the amputation of an arm. Many of the photos have backstamps of various photography studios in Louisville, Kentucky such as Excelsior Gallery, Gem Gallery, H. Metzell, and Alcan & Corbutt. Besides the enlisted men, a few officers are included: Major Abial R. Pierce, General Alfred Pleasonton, General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, and General William T. Sherman (from engraving). A complete list of the members of "M" company will be included with this lot for your reference. The photos are generally in fine condition. A great lot for the Civil War historian or researcher.
