1865 Fort Sumter Flag Re-Raising Stereoview. 6.75" x 3.25", on a yellow mount, featuring a view of the official flag-raising ceremony at the re-captured Fort Sumter. From the series The War for the Union: Photographic History. The printed label on the reverse reads in part, "War Views. No. 207. The Celebration at Fort Sumter, April 14, 1865. Arrival of the Guests, Charleston Harbor." The caption below the images reads, "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1865, by J.W. Campbell, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New-York." With a red George Washington two-cent revenue stamp on the verso.

After Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Robert Anderson, who had commanded and had to surrender the fort to the Confederates, was invited to raise the 33-star American flag at Fort Sumter once more. Tragically, President Lincoln was assassinated just hours after the ceremony. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Some wear and chipping at the corners and edges. Light soiling throughout and on verso. Foxing on the printed label on verso, along with some pencil notations and marks. Overall good.
