¼ Plate Ambrotype Image of Private O. E. Smith, D Company, Jeff Davis Legion Mississippi Cavalry. A fantastic image showing Smith seated in uniform with his sword and cocking the hammer of his Sharps Carbine with his thumb. Several details of Smith's uniform and gun have been enhanced in gold including the "S.M.C" letters on his kepi, his jacket buttons, shoulder scales, belt plate and the bands on his Sharps. A few scattered spots of loss to the image, otherwise bright, sharp and in very good condition. Housed in an embossed leather case (top lid detached), with bright mat and preserver. Included in the lot are two of Mr. Smith's 1895 dated State of Alabama, Sumter County tax receipts and a considerable number of photocopied official records of his service. O. E. Smith enlisted on May 1, 1861 as a private and mustered into D Company of the Jeff Davis Legion Mississippi Cavalry.
