    Description

[Texas Rangers]. Prohibition Era Photograph: "A Grand Haul." Twelve men, several of which are clearly armed, are featured in this 8" x 10", sepia toned image, standing behind of a large group of barrels, jugs, and buckets used for bootlegging liquor during Prohibition. Two of the men wear badges which are clearly seen pinned to their left breast. Sitting on the ground in front of the line of barrels is an African-American man. An inscription on the verso identifies the men as members of Capt. Roy W. Aldrich's company and dates the photograph to November 9, 1922. The raid occurred in "Smith County, Texas/18 miles, southwest of Tyler." During Prohibition, the Texas Rangers were active in thwarting the efforts of tequila smugglers from Mexico and illegal distilleries throughout the state.

The photograph is printed off-center on the sheet. Right edge is chipped. Small stain at the lower right corner; small spots of staining throughout, but not affecting the image. Four small pin holes are evident at the upper and lower edges.
