[Texas Rangers]. Private James. C. Barringer Carte de Visite, 1886. 2.5" x 4". Barringer served in Company "C" under Captain George W. Schmitt before serving as city marshal of Baird, Texas, near Abilene. Around the time that this portrait was taken, Company "C" was stationed in South Texas, policing small towns in the area and working to quell the unrest that surrounded the "Fence Cutting Wars." In November 1888 the company was disbanded due to budget cuts. Inscription on verso in the hand of Walter Durbin identifies the subject as "J. C. Barringer Laredo Tex June 1886." Backstamped "Tomas K. Hamilton, Fotografo, Laredo, - Texas." A previous collector has written his name on the verso in modern ink. Some foxing on photograph. Provenance: Durbin Family, Robert W. Stephens, George Jackson Collection.
