[Texas Rangers]. Photograph of Captain William M. Hanson and Members of Headquarters Company, circa 1919. 10" x 8", silver print. Ten Rangers, some of which are members of the newly formed Headquarters Company, Austin, Texas, are featured in this sepia toned image. Seated on the ground in front is Ranger S. O. Durst, directly behind him seated in folding chairs from left to right are John R. McMillan, Colonel H. C. Smith (adjutant general's office), Captain W. M. Hanson, and Sergeant Joe Brooks. Standing in the rear, from left to right, are Frank Matthews, George Millard, C. J. Blackwell, J. R. Hunnicutt, and Samuel Clay Blackwell. The men are heavily armed with lever action Winchester Model 1895 rifles and several have Colt revolvers at their hips. George Millard (second from left on the back row) appears to have a Colt Model 1911 holstered at his right and John McMillan (first from left in the middle [seated]), has a Luger P08 tucked into his waistband. Heavily silvered in the dark areas. Partial black border surrounds the image.

During the years of the First World War, the state of Texas expanded the force of Rangers with the addition of 400 men, the Special Rangers. After the war, in 1919, the Texas Legislature reduced the size of the Rangers to four companies of fifteen men each, serving under one captain and one sergeant. In addition, a headquarters company, to be based in the capital of Austin, was organized. The company was under the supervision of the Rangers' most senior captain, with one sergeant and four privates.

This image is found in the book "Texas Rangers and the Mexican Revolution" by Charles H. Harris III and Louis R. Sadler.
