    Description

[Nevada Mining]. Photograph of Virginia City, NV Mine by Tibbitts, circa 1908. Black and white photograph on muslin-backed paper. 8" x 6", mounted to an overall size of 10.75" x 9". Howard C. Tibbitts was a photographer for the Southern Pacific Railroad for over forty years. View of the famous Ophir Mine manufacturing buildings in Virginia City, NV. Railroad tracks are in the foreground and a train and several standing men are visible on the far left side of the image. Written in pencil on the mounting paper beneath the photograph: "Ophir Mine - Virginia City, Nev." Virginia City was one of the most famous boomtowns in the Old West as it virtually appeared overnight as a result of the "Comstock Lode" silver strike of 1859. During its peak, Virginia City had a population of nearly 30,000. When the Comstock Lode ended in 1898, the city's population sharply declined. Soiling present on top third of image. Some toning and light soiling on mounting paper.
