[Nevada Mining]. Photograph of Mining Dump Site by Tibbitts, circa 1908. Silver gelatin print on muslin-backed paper. 8" x 6", mounted to an overall size of 10.5" x 9". Howard C. Tibbitts was a photographer for the Southern Pacific Railroad for over forty years. The image shows mounds of displaced earth and rock in front of mountains. There is a wooden structure, possibly a sluice, running through the mounds. Written in pencil on the mounting paper beneath the photograph: "Dumps of the Con. Cal. mine. Virginia City, Cal", although the location is more likely the silver mining boomtown of Virginia City, Nevada. Image is bright and with good contrast. Light silvering on bottom edge and corners and upper left corner. Some toning and light soiling on mounting paper.
