[Nevada Mining]. Photograph of Austin, NV Mine by Tibbitts, circa 1908. Silver gelatin print on muslin-backed paper. 8" x 6", mounted to an overall size of 10.5" x 9". Howard C. Tibbitts was a photographer for the Southern Pacific Railroad for over forty years. Taken from a rise, there is a dump site in the foreground. A mineshaft, headframe, and other structures are in the midground of the image. There is a second headframe visible on the hillside in the background. Written in pencil on the mounting paper beneath the photograph: "Mine at Austin - Nevada." The Nevada mining camp was named after Austin, Texas and was founded in 1862 as part of the silver rush. There is a small depression mark on upper left corner of photograph and faint vertical scratch, otherwise condition is fine. Mounting paper has some toning.
