Description

[Mexican War]. John A. Quitman Half-Plate Salt Print Portrait with Signature, circa 1857, 5.25" x 7.25", unmounted. Pictured in this studio bust portrait is General John Anthony Quitman, congressman, governor, and Mexican War general. At the start of the Texas Revolution, Quitman set out for Texas, gathering and recruiting volunteers along the way. They finally joined up with the Texas army just after the Battle of San Jacinto. Quitman returned to Mississippi where he was appointed brigadier general of the Mississippi militia. At the outbreak of the Mexican War, Zachary Taylor appointed him brigadier general of volunteers. His forces were the first to enter the Mexico City, and he was consequently appointed governor of the city during American occupation. For his valuable service, Congress awarded him a sword, one of only fourteen in U.S. history to receive the honor. He later served as governor of Mississippi and U.S. congressman.

Included is a Quitman signature ("J. A. Quitman / Natchez / Miss.") excised from a larger document. Photograph signed on verso "Gen J A Quitman MC / Mississippi." Minor staining with mounting remnants on verso.
