[Jesse James/Cole Younger]: Gang Members Post-Mortem Northfield Raid Carte-de-Visite. In August, 1876, the James-Younger gang started their trip to Northfield, Minnesota. Gang members included: Frank and Jesse James, Cole, Bob and Jim Younger; Charley Pitts, Clell Miller, and Bill Chadwell. On September 6th, they arrive in Northfield. The gang divided into three parts. Jesse James, Bob Younger and Charley Pitts went into the bank. Cole Younger and Clell Miller stood outside the bank. Frank James, Jim Younger and Bill Chadwell stayed in their saddles at the end of the street. The behavior of the new comers gave the townspeople the impression that a bank robbery was in progress. Business owner J. A. Allen walked up to Clell Miller and asked, "What's going on here, young man?" Miller told him to get out of there and shoved Allen off the boardwalk. This rough behavior convinced the townspeople that their suspicions were right; the bank was being robbed. They got their rifles and handguns; the rest is history, as documented by this 2.5" x 3.75" post-mortem CDV of two of the robbers, propped up on a wooden walkway, the fatal gunshot wounds plainly visible. The caption below reads: "Bill Chadwell Height 5 ft. 10 in. Charley Pitts Height 6 feet 3 in. Robbers killed at Northfield, Sept. 7, 1876." F. V. Bingham of Northfield back mark. Trimmed at top with horizontal crease just below albumen image. Light, normal soiling.
