    Description

[George Armstrong Custer]. Stereoview: Group of Gen. Andrew Porter's Staff. 6.75" x 3.25". Photographed by James F. Gibson on May 20, 1862, during the Peninsula Campaign, and mounted on a golden mount. Nine junior officers are seen outside a tent, enjoying a drink, many of them smoking pipes. Of note is the presence of a young Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer, lying on a blanket on the front row (on the right), a small dog curled up against his chest. A contemporary label is attached at the lower edge reading, "Gen Andrew Porters Staff." A label affixed to the verso identifies this photograph as "Photographic Incidents of the War. / No. 389. . . . From [Alexander] Gardner's Gallery . . . Washington, D.C." Very slight damage to the upper corner of the left photograph and left edge of the right photograph.

Four days after this photograph was taken, Custer was with Gen. John G. Barnard scouting the Chickahominy River for a crossing site. Sitting their horses on the bank, Gen. Barnard wondered aloud how deep the water was. Custer spurred his horse into the middle of the water. For this act, Custer was given command of four companies and made an attack across the river, resulting in the capture of fifty rebels and the first Confederate battle flag of the war. Impressed, Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, commander of the Army of the Potomac, promoted him to captain and made him an aide-de-camp.
