    Description

[Female Union Soldier.] Frances Clalin Two Cartes de Visite. Each measuring 2.5" x 4", with an S. Masury, Boston imprint on verso, along with the handwritten description "James L. Clalin 4 mo Heavy Artillery Co. I 3 months, 13 mo Cavalry Co A 19 months (22 in all)." Two standing portraits of Clalin, one of her wearing a dress, the other of her dressed in full uniform holding a saber.

Frances Clalin Clayton enlisted under the alias "Jack Williams" in the Union Army to fight next to her husband, Elmer L. Clayton. Both enlisted in a Missouri regiment. Her husband was killed during the Battle of Stones River in December 1862. She is said to have fought at Fort Donelson and at least seventeen other engagements, having been wounded several times and taken prisoner on one occasion. Though the details are unclear, it was discovered sometime in 1863 that she was a woman and she was discharged from service. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Minor edge toning with a small amount of soiling at the edges and on verso of both. Else both very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
