    [Abraham Lincoln]. General Orders No. 72 and a Framed Albumen Portrait of Abraham Lincoln. One page, 5" x 7.25", Washington, D.C.; April 20, 1865. General Orders No. 72, issued by the U.S. War Department five days after the death of President Abraham Lincoln, announces the "General Officers and Guard of Honor" that will "accompany the remains of the late President from the City of Washington to Springfield, the capital of the State of Illinois, and continue with them until they are consigned to their final resting place." With a framed albumen of Abraham Lincoln originally taken by Anthony Berger, in Matthew Brady's Gallery, Washington, D.C., on February 9, 1864. The image was later adapted for use on the five-dollar bill. The albumen, 6" x 8" (visible) is housed in a 10.25" x 12" wooden frame.

    Condition: General Orders No. 72 has a horizontal crease across the middle that shows weakness; paper loss at the top corners and minor chips along the edges; tape used on verso to strengthen tears. Fragile condition. The frame that houses the Lincoln print has minor nicks with slight loss of paint; cardboard backing used in frame. Print appears in be in good condition.
