DescriptionGeronimo: A Beaded Walking Stick Made By The Famous Apache Leader. Geronimo was a skilled craftsman who years later appeared at the St. Louis World's Fair and Pan American Exposition, where he sold autographs and crafts including beaded items. But this walking stick dating from his incarceration at Fort Sills, Oklahoma is by far the earliest example of this type which we have encountered.
During the time when he was held at the fort Geronimo was surprisingly accessible to the general public. Previously Heritage sold an autograph obtained there, as well as a small medicine pouch he gifted to a young girl. This colorful walking stick is accompanied by a period cabinet photo with inscription on verso identifying it as having been made by the Apache chief. The cane itself is in very good condition, with minor damage to the beading. Unfortunately the cabinet photo has seen better days, but thankfully the inscription is in pencil and so has survived quite clearly. The remaining letters of the word "Cane" are present and visible by lifting the old tape around the photo's perimeter. Length of the cane is 36 inches.
Old West artifacts like this, accompanied by period authentications, are few and far between, and not surprisingly highly prized by collectors. The Eric C. Caren Collection
