Nightstick purported to have been Carried by Red Tomahawk Who Shot Sitting Bull. Length measures 22". The inscription on the nightstick reads, "Used by Red Tomahawk/ United States Indian/ Policeman Standing/ Rock, Sioux Angency [sic]/ Maria Townsend, daughter of Red Tomahawk." Included is a 1993 appraisal from Christie's Appraisals, Inc. and some information on Red Tomahawk from sources such as the State Historical Society of North Dakota and the Photograph Collection of the Denver Public Library. In 1890, Red Tomahawk, a Sioux Native American enlisted in the BIA Indian Police, accompanied his fellow policemen to arrest Sitting Bull on the orders of Major James McLaughlin for violating the ghost dance edict. The arrest turned violent, and it is Red Tomahawk who is credited with the fatal shot that killed Sitting Bull. Nightstick has light scratching throughout and minor wear to rope handle, otherwise in great condition.
