William T. Sherman Approves Scheme to Purchase Rebel Corn. 7.75" x 9.75" manuscript retained or file copy of a letter written to General Allen in Louisville on December 22, 1863. The writer, Wm. M. McPherson of St. Louis, proposes purchasing corn as a agent of the government, posing as a private individual. "... if known through the country that was for govt. use it would be destroyed by the Guerillas... it would require great caution until the corn was removed from the country... I propose to deliver to the Government at Memphis, Helena and Vicksburg... three hundred bushels of corn... each month [F.O.B. St. Louis]." The balance of the letter discusses terms and logistics. Endorsed on verso by Generals Sherman and Robert Allen (clerically written), who approve the plan and authorize its implementation. Accomplished on two pages of bifolium writing paper with minor separation at folds.
