    Description

William Bonney: Reno Evening Gazette First Report of the Death of "Billy the Kid". July 20, 1881 issue of the Reno Evening Gazette, bifolium 4 pp., 16" x 20.5". Page 3, column 5 has a brief news item titled "Reported Killing of Billy the Kid", datelined Las Vegas, New Mexico, July 19th. "... the notorious murderer and outlaw, who for several years has been the terror of New Mexico cattle men, was on the 14th inst. killed by Pat Garrett, Sheriff of Lincoln county. Garrett has been on his trail for some time, and on the 14th overhauled him in a cabin at Fort Sumner and shot him dead. The Kid was a native of New York City. His real name is McCarthy." And, if that wasn't enough, the front page talks about a Missouri train robbery "... undoubtedly done by Jessie [sic] and Frank James... Jesse lives in Clay County, Mo., and he can gather a party to rob a train in about two days' time." This followed by a brief mention of Sitting Bull who is prepared to surrender to Captain Clifford. Excellent condition.
