Whalemen's Shipping Paper for the Ship Garland with Two Related Documents. One and a half partially-printed pages, 17.5" x 24", New Bedford [Massachusetts], May-June 1849. This paper represents an agreement between "the Owner, Master, Seamen and Mariners of the Ship Garland John N. Smith master now bound from the Port of New Bedford to the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans on a Whaling Voyage." Listed are the names of twenty-three men, all crew of the whaling vessel Garland, with pertinent information such as their time of entry into the ranks of the crew, their occupation aboard the ship (including first, second, and third mates, cook, seaman, cooper, carpenter, blacksmith, et al.), the signature of a witness to each man's signing, and their share of the profit. Of note is the entry on the paper stating that "No Distilled Spirituous Liquor will be put on board this vessel by the Owner, except for strictly medicinal use." The verso contains a reprint of "Acts of the Congress of the United States of America, For the Government of Seamen, Merchants, Etc." The entire document is affixed to a backing board at the upper corners only. Some separation of the vertical folds has caused minor loss of paper. Lightly chipped edges show some age toning. Scattered spots of foxing are also seen.

Two additional documents are affixed near the lower edge. The first, measuring 8.5" x 6.25", represents the discharge of John Jones, James Middleton, and Isaac Peacock (for mutinous conduct), all of whom were crew members on the Garland. It further states that four other men deserted the ship. Issued by the "Consuate [sic] of the United States of America" at Valparaiso, February 12, 1850. The second, 7.5" x 6.25", is a document signed by the collector of the Port of New Bedford, dated June 19, 1849, certifying that the "Copy of the Original Shipping Articles of the Ship Garland" is true. The latter has a small hole at the upper left corner from where a wax seal once was. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
