    More Information:

Two friendly letters from Maugham to North, both on Villa Mauresque stationery, dated 1963, and signed "W. S. Maugham." Four letters to North from Searle, Maugham's secretary/companion, dated 1963, 1964, and 1966, three of which are on Villa Mauresque stationery. One personal check from North to Maugham, endorsed "W. S. Maugham" on reverse. All letters with transmittal envelopes. All in very good or fine condition.

Paul H. North, Jr. was a book dealer and Maugham collector in Columbus, Ohio who often removed half-title pages from books and sent them to Maugham to sign - an unfortunate practice that presumably saved on postage. When the leaves were returned, they were pasted back into the books. From the tone of Maugham's cheerful letters to North, they were on friendly terms.

This lot contains six one-page typed letters addressed to North, all with transmittal envelopes, as well as one check written by North and endorsed by Maugham. Two of the letters are from Maugham, written in 1963, answering requests for signed books. The 1964 check (in the amount of one dollar!), signed by North and payable to Maugham, was probably reimbursement for postage.

The four remaining letters are to North from Alan Searle, Maugham's secretary/companion. Three of the letters are dated 1963 and 1964. In them, Searle acknowledges receipt of flyleaves for Maugham to sign, but in each letter he warns that Maugham is very ill and is unable to sign many more items. The final letter, dated January 12, 1966, less than a month after Maugham's death, thanks North for his letter of condolence.
