VINTAGE COLLEGE YEARBOOKS - NAGURSKI, NEVERS AND GRANGE. All three of them became charter members of Pro Football’s Hall of Fame. And elegantly representing 274 each are their offered yearbooks. As a trio of stately volumes, they almost appear to be a related three-book set. Within a quarter of an inch, they each measure about 9" x 12"; they have roughly similar page counts - about 570; and each is graced with ornate covers and the finest page paper available. If prepared today, they’d be cost-prohibitive to publish. The first of these is Bronko Nagurski’s 1930 "Gopher" (EX) of the University of Minnesota. As this one appeared, Bronko had just departed to sign a professional contract with the Bears. A full-page photo of him appears, as expected, in the athletics section. He’d just won All-American honors at two positions. The second is a 1927 "Illio" (VG/EX-EX - mod. wear at top and bottom of spine) of Red Grange’s University of Illinois. Grange, as we know, was an All-American halfback from 1923 through 1925. He too had moved on to the Bears by 1927, but his legacy at Illinois was cited several times in this yearbook. The third, and perhaps the finest, is a 1926 Stanford "Quad" (EX), detailing Ernie Nevers’ alma mater. Before graduating, in 1926, with a degree in economics, he excelled in all three major sports. Despite his All-American performance at fullback, he reported directly to baseball’s St. Louis Browns where he plied his talent for three seasons before returning to the gridiron with the Chicago Cardinals.
