    Description

Victor M. Rose Autograph Letter and Manuscript Signed. Two pages, 8" x 11" (height varies), Texas, January 4, 1870[?]. Rose has written a short letter to R. M. Hall, commissioner of the Land Office, on the verso of a dedication to his poem "The Wizzard of Tolache, a Phantasie." Rose has dedicated the work to "...the statesmen and purists comprising the present government of Texas, who have blessed the people of the Lone State state with the best administration in its annals...which will be remembered...as its Golden Age." He then lists members of the current government including Lawrence S. Ross, Frank R. Lubbock, James S. Hogg, et al. In the letter, he states that he hopes "...the dedication of this poem would be acceptible [sic] to the gentlemen composing the administration, I venture to beg that you will kindly bring it to their attention, as I hope each may feel inclined to subscribe for a number of copies..." Heavily damaged along the edges with separation at places along the folds. Scattered spots of staining.

Rose was a former newspaper editor and lawyer who penned a number of historical works in addition to writing poetry. He was born in Victoria, Texas, and served in Ross' Texas Brigade during the Civil War.
