Vicksburg The Daily Citizen Wallpaper Reprint of July 2, 1863 Edition. One page, 13.25" x 19.25". Among the most famous Civil War newspapers were those printed in besieged Vicksburg, Mississippi. Once the city's regular stocks of newsprint were depleted, J.M. Swords, publisher of the Daily Citizen, began using wallpaper for printing stock. Federal troops, entering Vicksburg, found the type set-up for the July 2nd edition in the paper's offices and, after a few adjustments to the text, ran off a number of copies. These proved to be such popular souvenirs that subsequent copies were made well into the post-war era, many at G.A.R. reunions in the 1870s. This particular later edition is unique in that it has with it a handwritten letter of provenance dated 1897 certifying that this copy "...was purchased by my brother on the 4th day of July 1863... Said paper was mailed to my father at Davenport, Iowa, and has been in possession of our family ever since." Multiple folds with weakness and holes at intersections, toned, good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
