Very Fine Victorian Game Chest with Ivory Components. Hinged lid opens upward and doors on front swing out to reveal the contents: ivory Chess and Checkers sets, Cribbage board with ivory inlay, bone dice, and seven (of eight) small Bell & Hammer game pieces which appear to be made of ivory. Lifting the Cribbage board reveals a full 28-piece ivory Domino set. Underneath the top tray are two additional trays: one contains two complete sets of playing cards, two leather and gilt Whist markers, the five cards for the Bell & Hammer game, as well as a set of Bezique cards (sevens through aces x 2) and the accompanying leather markers, all made by Goodall & Son of London. The bottom tray contains an ebony dice shaker, the Bell & Hammer gavel, six painted lead horses and three gates for the Steeple Chase game, and several dozen red, white, blue, and yellow round markers. Stored in the lid are Chess/ Checkers and Backgammon game boards, as well as one for the Steeple Chase game. The boards themselves are beautifully made, with textured leatherette surfaces and rich gold leaf decoration (excellent condition except for one separation where the board was folded). The chest itself is very substantial, and made of burled walnut and tiger maple. Excellent condition, with only a tiny bit of unobtrusive damage noted for accuracy. Rarely seen this complete. A marvelous circa 1880s set with tremendous display presence.
