    U.S. Hospital Ship Ginnie Hopkins: Group of Two Cartes de Visite and Two Documents. The Mississippi River hospital steamer is seen in a 3.75" x 2.25" photograph with rounded corners. On her side is clearly seen "U.S. Hospital." Also included is a 2.5" x 3.75" cdv of Captain James S. Johnson, from whose collection these items have come. Johnson is featured in an oval chest up portrait surrounded by an elaborate border. Mansfield's City Gallery of St. Louis backstamp. Rounded corners and scattered foxing can be seen on the mount.

    With the photographs are two documents pertaining to the ship. The first, measuring 7.75" x 6.25" and dated September 12, 1865, acknowledges the discharge of Capt. Johnson from "service on account of Close of War." The second, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", is a letter of endorsement from Edward Whitney praising Capt. Johnson's character. Whitney was the surgeon in charge of the hospital on-board Johnson's ship. All are in very good or better condition.
