U.S. 38-Star Silk Flag With an Unusual Medallion Pattern, Circa 1877-1890. 17.5" x 17.5", silkscreened on one side, with stars arranged in an unusual pattern featuring a single medallion of 11 stars, a single star in the center, possibly representing Colorado, and a uniquely arranged border of 26 stars. President Grant signed a proclamation August 1, 1876 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. It became known as the Centennial State, as a result of becoming an official state 28 days after the Centennial of the U.S. Even though the official star count for US flags in 1876 was the 37, it was common for makers to produce flags in advance of their official dates. This example with very light staining, a trivial hole on the second red stripe from the top and some modest fraying at the edges.
