    Union Soldier Samuel Donnell Autograph Letter Signed. Four integral pages, 4.75" x 7.75", Lewiston, April 21, 1861, to his grandfather just one week after the fall of Fort Sumter: "We are having exciting times, and the young men here are all ready for war, the light Infantry has more men than uniforms, and still new recruits are offering. . . . I have enlisted . . . I was in the Armory this morning the young men expect bloody times, but are ready to go." Donnell was mustered in the Union Army on May 3, 1861, as a private in Co. "K," 1st Maine Infantry. He mustered out in August 1861. He reenlisted as a sergeant in Co. "K," 10th Maine Infantry, on October 4, 1861, and served until May 1863, when he left the army.
